Shanghai International Circuit, China
27 September, 2018
A trio of the most experienced GT3 drivers in China will spear-head an Absolute Racing Audi entry into the inaugural SIC888 endurance event at Shanghai International Circuit on October 7.
Sun Jingzu, Cheng Congfu (Franky) and Adderly Fong will share a second-generation Audi R8 LMS GT3 in the 888-kilometre endurance event, the three experienced GT campaigners expected to be outright contenders.
Cheng is arguably the most famous GT driver in China, his pioneering efforts have seen him entered in open-wheelers, DTM and Le Mans prototypes whilst also contributing to the success of the growth of GT racing in Asia as a regular at the highest levels of competition.
Just two weeks ahead of the SIC888 event, Cheng delivered an eye-catching performance at the hotly contested Blancpain GT Series Asia behind the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS GT3, the Absolute driver qualifying the car at the front row before being turned around on the opening lap whilst leading.
Alongside long-time friend Sun Jingzu – who comes off the most recent round of the Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup as a race winner and himself a strong contender during the same Blancpain event – the two drivers form a formidable partnership, however they will be joined in the event by one of Absolute Racing’s long standing stars – Hong Kong’s Adderly Fong.
A former Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup Champion (2013), and a race winner in all manner of GT3 competitions in Asia and the USA, Fong has serious credentials which include a stint as an F1 test driver and GP3 regular, however more recently he himself was a podium finisher at Shanghai in the Blancpain Series in the #7 Audi.
With a number of Asia’s leading drivers looking for a start in the very first SIC888, the Absolute Racing stars know they can expect some strong competition, but based on their recent performances at the circuit – and Jingzu’s pre-event preparation, which will include entry into the fourth event of the Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup on the same schedule as SIC888 (the Cup will run on October 4-6) – they could well be the pace-setters at Shanghai.
